Energy-efficient ventilation: optimise your comfort

Simple solutions to ventilate effectively while saving energy

Save money with intelligent ventilation

Issues with mould and dampness are a common experience in homes. Beyond a certain threshold, humidity can become dangerous to health. In addition, a house with damp air takes longer to heat and therefore leads to excessive heating consumption. Humidity can also cause damage to the building.

We produce more humidity in our homes than you might think: in the bathroom, the kitchen, our houseplants… Good air quality inside the home depends largely on the ventilation in place. Beyond taking steps to ventilate your home properly, there could be the option of installing a controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV) system.

Open the windows

Ventilating all of the rooms in your home at least twice a day can help prevent the development of mould. Leaving windows slightly open all day is not recommended, especially in winter. To avoid excessive temperature changes indoors, it is best to open the windows fully for 5 to 10 minutes. Creating a current of air which crosses the room from one side to the other is the most effective way of refreshing the air within your space.

In the bathroom, open the windows after a bath or shower to allow the water vapour produced to escape.

In the kitchen, use the extractor fan and open the windows regularly to remove water vapour and humidity from cooking.

Controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV)

Installing a controlled mechanical ventilation system in your home allows you to avoid losing as much heat and as a result consume less heating. CMV improves air quality and prevents the formation of mould.

There are several types of CMV: single flow, double flow, high-efficiency double flow, thermodynamic double flow and decentralised double flow. Their suitability varies according to criteria such as the type of housing (new or old house, apartment), the surface area and the configuration of the rooms in particular. The budget to take into consideration is substantial, but the energy savings that CMV brings are significant in the long term.

CMV offers many advantages: in addition to continually renewing the air, it avoids drafts and noise pollution or polluting particles that can be encountered when opening windows to ventilate.

Things to avoid

  • A large number of houseplants can make the air more humid
  • Leaving windows open all day can reduce the overall interior temperature and bring humidity inside
